Who are Borwell:

Based at the Malvern Hills Science Park in Worcestershire, borwell specialise in delivering secure software solutions to businesses throughout the county.

Founded in 2003, the borwell team has grown to include talented software engineers who provide bespoke software solutions which enable local businesses to operate securely and protect against the very real threat of cyber-attacks.

Supporting local businesses

Despite being home to some of the most talented and skilled software and defence professionals in the UK, Worcestershire is not alone in demonstrating poor cyber security practices, and this is one of the reasons why borwell are passionate about sharing their expertise with businesses in the region.

The Borwell philosophy

The Borwell philosophy is to deliver world class solutions to businesses of all sizes, supporting their day to day operations to improve efficiency, security and ultimately profitability.

Why Worcestershire businesses need to improve cyber security

A majority of Small and Medium sized businesses in Worcestershire are not prepared for the cyber security challenges ahead.  With the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force on 25th May 2018, even more emphasis will now be placed on keeping sensitive and personal data secure, yet the borwell team continue to encounter examples of poor practice in businesses of all sizes and across all sectors.

Some examples the team have seen include:

Using one password for every system

And sometimes, using the word ‘password’

Using Windows XP as an operating system

When this is no loner supported and therefore completely vulnerable

Not specifying different privileges and levels of access

to different operators

Having no anti-virus software installed

Not making back-ups of important data

Not configuring a firewall correctly

to block unauthorised access

Using personal phones and laptops for business tasks

Even though these devices are not up to date or password protected

Having poor physical security

Perhaps the business has outgrown their current internal or external IT support provision or needs expert advice on how to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.  Whatever the reason, cyber security is going to remain top of the agenda for the foreseeable future, so the specialists from Borwell are in growing demand to support the region’s businesses to be better prepared in the war against cyber-crime.

Be Cyber Secure

Together with the National Cyber Skills Centre (NCSC) and the University of Worcester, the borwell team deliver the Be Cyber Secure programme for Worcestershire County Council.

Who is it for?

The Be Cyber Secure programme supports local businesses to become more cyber secure, allowing them to grow and prosper in an increasingly technological business environment.  There are eligibility criteria, but generally the businesses helped by the programme are privately owned Worcestershire SMEs, that are trading on a B2B basis and handle personal or sensitive data.

What is involved?

Initially the borwell team use their expertise to undertake a Business Diagnostic – essentially a risk assessment which identifies areas where data may be vulnerable.  Interns and graduates from Worcester University support the process by performing the Technical Diagnostic, which captures all of the IT devices and system configurations used by the business. borwell then prepare a package of practical activities, training, advice and guidance to help the business improve its digital security.

What will your business gain?

Eligible businesses will enjoy a minimum of 12 hours support, typically comprising technical support, training and guidance, all with the aim of improving cyber security and helping to remove any security obstacles that may be preventing the business from moving forward.
