Focus Environmental Consultants was started in 2009, specialising in ecology and arbocultural surveys for domestic customers and housebuilders to provide support with pre- and post-planning permissions.
They have a diverse project portfolio, ranging from major infrastructure contracts to smaller projects for private individuals across England and Wales. As the business grew, Focus Environmental Consultants identified several areas where external support could accelerate progress.
The Support Received
Recognising the value of tailored, expert guidance, Focus Environmental Consultants approached Worcestershire Growth Hub for support. They were looking for support with a number of projects across innovation, recruitment, training and employee well-being.
Through their guidance and connections, Focus have been able to access a range of local grant schemes, including Innovation Worcestershire, the Malvern Hills Rural Fund, and SkillsBoost.
These have enabled them to invest in new technologies, enhance their operations, and upskill their team to meet evolving business needs.
Business Impact
With the introduction to SkillsBoost via the Growth Hub, staff have been obtaining the necessary qualifications to enable them to carry out detailed watercourse assessments to meet Biodiversity Net Gain requirements. Further support came via the Malvern Hills Rural Fund, which enabled Focus Environmental Consultants to expand its night-vision aid service.
Investment in infrared camera technology has also reduced the number of surveyors required on site, improving efficiency while maintaining high survey standards. Innovation Worcestershire funding allowed specialist bat ecologists from the company to collaborate with a skilled software engineer to develop a cutting-edge automated thermal camera monitoring system.
Focus Environmental Consultants has also prioritised staff wellbeing by signing up to the Work Well Live Better programme, embedding a stronger focus on employee health.
