County firm puts down roots through tree planting project

A Worcestershire gritting and snow clearance company has planted over 50 trees at two local schools as part of the firm’s drive to be carbon neutral.

AA Salt, which helps hundreds of businesses keep their premises safe in the winter months by gritting and snow ploughing car parks and access roads, has donated the oak, birch, rowan and maple trees to both Bowbrook House School near Pershore and Worcester’s Nunnery Wood Primary School.

At both schools the trees will help provide more forest school activities in the years ahead – with Bowbrook House making the trees part of its future plans for an ‘eco area’. Nunnery Wood Primary School plans to use the trees to improve its summer storytelling space.

Ben Tanner, sales and operations director at AA Salt said: “We have always been very aware of our impact on the environment and recently we have pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. Our partnerships with Bowbrook House and Nunnery Wood are very much part of that, so it’s brilliant to work with two schools who are truly interested in making a difference for future generations.

“The pupils and teachers at both schools have been exceptional and are really embracing this project with some great ideas on how they will be used. They have also played a key role in planning where the trees were to be planted.

“We look forward to seeing the trees grow and how they will benefit both schools in the years ahead.”

Since AA Salt was formed 21 years ago the company has used white marine salt for all of its work, which unlike traditional red grit and salt, is less-toxic. The family firm, which is managed by Mr Tanner, his mother Nikki Rogers and her husband Mark, has gone on to employ 25 people and grown to over 400 customers.

The tree planting initiative follow’s AA Salt announcing this autumn that it aims to be carbon neutral by 2030. The company made a series of environmental pledges including rainwater harvesting and continuing to research the potential of having a fully-electric fleet of vehicles in the next 10 years.

Last year the company was awarded the Family Business of the Year award by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.
