Staff Wellbeing support: Suicide Prevention Programme

Since November 2020, The Worcestershire County Council have been working to prevent suicides across Worcestershire as part of a National Suicide Prevention Programme. The programme team sits in Public Health at Worcestershire County Council.  Their funding runs until November 2023 and the team have a focus on middle-aged men.

Men in Herefordshire and Worcestershire are three times more likely to take their lives than women (PHE Fingertips, 2018-2020), and middle-aged men are an age group at particular risk.

Work so far…

Our Now We’re Talking to Prevent Suicide campaign launched on Suicide Prevention Day 2021 – the website hosts free suicide prevention resources,
our upcoming events and myths & facts around suicide.

We have been identifying communities across the footprint where men are most at risk and are starting to embed preventative measures within those settings.  This  has involved enhancing existing training, improving signposting & community awareness of suicide, and piloting community & workplace initiatives.  We’ve been working with a variety of stakeholders on key areas, including:

A whole system approach…

We have been working with Talk Community at Herefordshire Council, Herefordshire and Worcestershire NHS Health & Care Trust, Herefordshire & Worcestershire CCG, Worcestershire and Herefordshire Healthwatch and our primary care networks (alongside many others).

People with lived experience and organisations working directly with communities in Herefordshire and Worcestershire are continuing to help us to design our programme.  Thanks to everyone who has input so far, including Worcestershire Association of Carers, Worcester Community Trust, Onside and the Cart Shed.

Our 2022 plans involve…

  • Targeted roll out of citizen and community training
  • Distribution of seed funding
  • Launch of suicide prevention in the workplace programme
  • Rolling out the Orange Button Community scheme across workplaces and in the community
