Titania explain how BEEP has created a much better working environment for their team

About the business

Titania, a Worcester-based cyber security/software specialist, was founded in 2009 by Ian Whiting. They sell automated configuration analysis tools across the world, with around 80 percent of its revenue coming from the US, where its largest client is the American AirForce.

The Challenge

Titania has been through rapid growth and continues to expand. In 2014 the firm relocated to its current premises and engaged in a series of renovations. Titania was interested in exploring the opportunity to make an investment that both lowered its carbon footprint and generated cost-savings over a short period.

The Solution

In March 2017 Titania was the first Worcester business to apply to the Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) for a grant. Independent energy management experts, Briar Associates, were appointed and carried out a free energy efficiency assessment of Titania’s new premises to identify where the firm could make improvements and what kind of energy savings they could make. The energy efficiency report highlighted the need to replace the lighting, boiler and add secondary glazing to the windows. The advisors also helped Titania develop an action plan to reduce energy. Operations Director, Ruth Allsopp said “We received grant funding of £15,000.00 to replace the lighting with LED, install double glazing and enhance the boiler and heating systems,” “We selected locally sourced trusted providers to carry out the works. The entire process was smooth and the consultant was very helpful. Every bit of correspondence was really positive. It was a good experience for us and I would definitely recommend it to anyone else looking to reduce the energy usage,” she said. “We replaced all the lights on the first, second and fourth floor, and installed double glazing throughout the entire building,” said Ruth.

The Results

Despite growing staff numbers, the savings to date have been £7,050 (22% reduction in energy bill) and 24.6 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. “In the application there was a focus on the economic benefits, but there was also an important HR element to the work too – because the work on the windows helped to regulate the temperature and created a much better working environment for our team,” said Ruth.

The Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is a partnership between Worcestershire Councils, Herefordshire Council, Telford & Wrekin Council, Shropshire Council, Shropshire Chamber of Commerce and Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.
