Business Health and Safety

All businesses need to be mindful of health and safety in the workplace. Whether you operate in a hazardous environment or consider your workplace very low risk, all employers, or those who are self-employed, have a legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of everyone associated with the business – including employees, customers, visitors and members of the public.

If you are concerned about keeping people safe why not speak to Worcestershire Business Central today on 01905 677 888 to find out the best person to speak to for advice on your responsibilities.

For most small, low risk businesses, the steps you need to take to protect your business are very straightforward. We’ll outline some of the main points you need to consider below but for more comprehensive advice please speak to our team or visit the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.

Health and Safety in the Workplace: Basics for Your Business

Here are our quick tips for writing a business plan:

N

Appoint a competent person

If your business is small then this may be yourself or you could nominate someone else from within your company to help ensure you meet your health and safety duties.
N

Create a Health and Safety Policy

To describe to others how you will manage health and safety matters in your workplace. If you have less than 5 employees you don’t need to write this down but it is good practice to have a policy that you and your staff can follow.
N

Display the health and safety law poster

If you employ anyone you need to display this poster which outlines British health and safety laws.
N

Control risks

This will include carrying out a risk assessment to identify the sensible measures you can take to protect people in your workplace.
N

Talk to your employees

To let them know how you are managing risks and what measures are in place to protect them. This will reassure your workforce that you take their health and safety seriously.
N

Provide training

You need to provide adequate training for your employees on how to work safely and without risks to their health. Remember contractors and self-employed people working for you will also need to be made aware of any risks and hazards, how they are managed and how to follow emergency procedures.
N

Provide correct facilities

This includes providing everyone in your workplace with adequate welfare facilities (such as bathrooms, drinking water and somewhere to store their coats and bags), a clean, light workplace with a reasonable temperature and properly maintained premises and equipment.
N

First Aid provision

At the very least your workplace should be equipped with a well- stocked first aid kit, accident book and an appointed person to deal with first aid arrangements.
